Every year thousands of students burn the midnight oil in an attempt to crack the Common Entrance Test (CAT) for pursuing MBA in the reputed and esteemed IIMs. However, CAT does not follow a clear procedure for calculating the exam taker’s percentile. They are made to sign the NDA which prevents them to raise their voice if the results are unfair by any means.
The CAT exam is conducted in two slots – in the morning and in the afternoon. The morning slot was pretty tough as compared to the afternoon slot. However, there has been a huge dissatisfaction among students of both the slots regarding their results.
The CAT score card carries a student’s sectional percentile and sectional scaled scores. This is a part of the normalization of the CAT scores which is done to ensure a fair chance to all students for admission into the IIMs. However, to utter dismay of students, the scaled score that was published in the scorecard was way less than their raw score (The raw score was calculated from the answer key published by the IIML itself).
IIM Lucknow is the conveyer for CAT examination 2017. The results were published by them on the morning of 8th January. Since then, there has been a huge uproar among students. More than 500 students have claimed to have received incorrect results. Hundreds of RTIs have been filed in a single day and the number is expected to increase exponentially. There are rumors that the students could file a PIL. If this happens, the admission procedure will be withheld as of now. If what the students claimed is true, then the students would lose a year. One such dissatisfied student published this photo yesterday demanding an explanation. (The authenticity of the results is yet to be verified).
The discrepancy in scores is clearly evident from the above scorecards. Both the students are from the same slot and the student who has a scaled score of 111.74 has received 87.93 percentile whereas the one who has a scaled score of 108.87 has received 89.24 percentile. Hashtags like #cat2017unfair, #cat2017transparency and #cat2017 are trending all over twitter.
We sincerely urge our honorable HRD ministry to look into the affair and initiate a reevaluation process. It could save the future of the students. The nation could lose a lot of bright and young minds owing to this discrepancy. However, during all this, IIML has yet not commented on anything.
